Why spring
Austin’s air conditioning season is long. Once summer arrives, the system runs for many hours a day and service schedules fill up. Spring gives you time to find and fix problems before the system is under its heaviest load.
Spring is also pollen season in Central Texas. A clean, well-fitted filter helps keep more of it out of the air the system circulates.
A spring checklist
1. Change or clean the filter
Start the season with a fresh filter, or clean a washable one according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Check that it fits without gaps.
2. Look at registers and returns
Vacuum the grilles and look for dust that blows out when the system starts, for debris, or for signs of pests. Note anything unusual for the technician.
3. Check the condensate drain
The cooling system removes moisture from the air. A blocked drain line can let water back up, and moisture in the system can lead to mold. Make sure it drains freely.
4. Clean the dryer vent
A restricted dryer exhaust makes the dryer run longer and hotter. See the signs your dryer vent needs attention and our dryer vent cleaning service.
5. Have the equipment serviced
Ask a qualified HVAC technician to service the cooling equipment before summer. Clean coils and a clean blower help the system run efficiently.
Is spring duct cleaning worth it?
Duct cleaning is worth booking when an inspection finds a problem: substantial debris, pests or visible mold growth. The EPA recommends cleaning as needed rather than on a fixed schedule. If you have just finished a winter renovation, spring is a good time to have the ducts checked; see duct cleaning after remodeling.
Book before the rush
Scheduling in spring usually means more flexibility on dates than in the middle of summer. Check our current offers, or read our guide to air duct cleaning in Austin.
