Insulation to the level Austin’s climate calls for

Austin is in climate zone 2. ENERGY STAR recommends R-49 for an uninsulated attic floor there, and R-38 when 3–4 inches are already installed. Adding insulation to that level slows the heat moving down from a hot attic into the rooms below.

The scope

  • Blown-in insulation — loose-fill insulation blown evenly across the attic floor, filling around joists, wiring and obstructions.
  • Batts — pre-cut insulation for open joist bays with regular spacing.
  • Depth markers — markers that show the installed depth so the level can be checked later.
Air sealing before insulation gives the best result.

Before you ask for an estimate

  1. Know what you have now

If you can, measure the current depth in a few places or send photos of the attic floor.

  2. Seal first

Gaps around lights, pipes and the attic hatch should be sealed before insulation covers them.

How the visit goes

What happens on the day

We confirm the insulation type and target level with you before starting.
  1. 01

    Prepare the attic

Vents are kept clear, and baffles are fitted where needed so insulation does not block soffit airflow.

  2. 02

    Install the insulation

Insulation is blown or laid evenly to the agreed depth across the attic floor.

  3. 03

    Check the coverage

Depth is checked across the attic and you get a photo of the finished work.

Questions

Straight answers about attic insulation

How much insulation does an Austin attic need?

ENERGY STAR recommends R-49 for an uninsulated attic floor in climate zone 2, or R-38 where 3–4 inches are already installed.

Blown-in or batts?

Blown-in insulation fills irregular spaces and works around obstructions; batts suit open joist bays with regular spacing. We recommend the type that suits your attic.

Can new insulation go on top of old?

Often, if the existing insulation is dry and in good condition. Damaged or contaminated insulation should be removed first.

How long does installation take?

Most homes are done in a single visit. We give you a time estimate with the scope.
