When topping up is not the right answer

New insulation can often go on top of what is already there, but not always. Insulation that is wet, moldy, contaminated by rodents or badly compressed should come out first. Removal clears the attic floor so problems underneath can be seen and fixed before new insulation goes in.

The scope

  • Vacuum removal — loose-fill and batt insulation removed through a hose to a collection unit outside, without carrying it through the house.
  • Debris and nesting material — droppings, nests and debris removed along with the insulation.
  • A clear attic floor — the space left ready for cleanup, air sealing and new insulation.
Removal is usually paired with attic cleanup and new insulation.

Before you ask for an estimate

  1. Tell us why it needs to go

Water damage, a past rodent problem, odors or simply very old insulation each affect how the job is planned.

  2. Plan the next step

Most homeowners re-insulate right after removal. We can quote both together.

How the visit goes

What happens on the day

We protect the living space and confirm the scope before starting.
  1. 01

    Protect and set up

The attic access and the path to it are protected, and the vacuum hose is run from the attic to the collection unit outside.

  2. 02

    Remove the insulation

Insulation and debris are vacuumed out across the agreed area.

  3. 03

    Check the attic floor

Once clear, the attic floor is checked for leaks, gaps and damage before the next step.

Questions

Straight answers about insulation removal

Do I need to remove old insulation before adding new?

Not always. Dry, clean insulation in good condition can often stay. Wet, moldy, contaminated or pest-damaged insulation should be removed first.

Is insulation removal messy?

Insulation is vacuumed through a hose to a collection unit outside, so it is not carried through the house. Work areas are protected.

What happens to the old insulation?

It is bagged and hauled away.

Should the attic be sanitized after removal?

If there was a rodent problem or contamination, cleanup and sanitizing before re-insulating is a good idea. See our attic sanitization and cleanup service.
