Project details

A closer look at the job

What we found

The photos show rodent remains on equipment and on the framing in the attic, along with debris and contaminated material around them. After the cleanup the attic was finished with fresh blown-in insulation across the floor.

How we approached it

The attic was cleaned before anything new went in. We photographed the affected areas, then removed the remains and contaminated debris, working with protective equipment. The cleaned surfaces were sanitized so the space was ready for new material. Fresh insulation was then installed across the attic floor. Doing the cleanup first means the new insulation is not laid over contamination.

Signs to watch for

  • Scratching or movement sounds in the ceiling
  • Droppings or nesting material in the attic
  • A persistent unpleasant smell from the attic or vents
  • Flattened or tunnelled insulation
  • Gnawed wiring, duct or wood

Why it matters

Rodent remains and droppings in an attic cause odors and can carry bacteria. They also contaminate the insulation around them, which then has to be removed. Installing new insulation without cleaning first traps the problem underneath. Cleaning, sanitizing and then insulating deals with the cause and restores the attic's insulation.

Outcome

How it finished

The attic was cleared of remains and debris, sanitized, and finished with a new layer of insulation.

Questions

About this kind of job

Straight answers to the questions we hear most about this kind of work.

Do you deal with the rodents themselves?

Our work is the cleanup, sanitizing and insulation. If animals are still active, they should be dealt with first so the attic stays clean afterwards.

Why replace the insulation after a rodent problem?

Insulation around the affected areas absorbs droppings and odors. Cleaning the attic and installing fresh insulation is more effective than leaving the old material in place.

Is the cleanup safe for the people living in the home?

The work is done with protective equipment and the contaminated material is removed from the attic and bagged, keeping it out of the living space.

Can you check the ducts in the attic at the same time?

Yes. If the attic has ductwork, we can check it for damage or contamination during the visit.
