Keep the cool air cool on the way

In many Austin homes, ducts run through an attic that can be far hotter than the rooms below. Uninsulated or poorly insulated ducts pick up that heat. ENERGY STAR recommends sealing air leaks with mastic or metal tape and insulating the ducts you can access, such as those in attics, crawl spaces and garages.

The scope

  • Seal first — joints and seams sealed with mastic or metal tape before insulation goes on.
  • Wrap and insulate — exposed ducts, plenums and fittings wrapped with duct insulation and a vapor barrier.
  • Damaged insulation — torn, wet or missing duct insulation replaced.
Often combined with duct repair and sealing on the same visit.

Attic, garage or crawl space: tell us where the ductwork runs and how it is reached.

Questions

Straight answers about duct insulation

Why insulate ducts in the attic?

The attic can be much hotter than the house. ENERGY STAR recommends insulating ducts in attics, crawl spaces and garages.

Should ducts be sealed before insulating?

Yes. Insulation does not stop air leaks; sealing comes first.

Can I use duct tape?

No. ENERGY STAR advises never to use cloth duct tape for sealing ducts; use mastic or metal tape.

Why do my ducts sweat?

Cold ducts in a humid attic can collect condensation if their insulation or vapor barrier is damaged.
