Dirty flex air duct run in a home before duct cleaning
The request

What the homeowner needed

Dust lining the inside of flex duct and settling in the trunk is carried toward the rooms every time the system runs. The homeowner wanted the whole system cleaned, not only the registers.

Work performed

  1. 01Inspect the system. Look inside the trunk and a sample of the flex runs to confirm where the build-up was.
  2. 02Clean the trunk and runs. Clean the supply trunk and each flex run under negative pressure, so loosened dust is pulled out of the system.
  3. 03Check the result. Photograph the inside of the runs again so the before and after can be compared.

Project details

A closer look at the job

What we found

The photos show dust and debris lining the inside of the flex duct runs, with the inner walls darkened by build-up, and dust settled along the bottom of the supply trunk. The after photos, taken from inside the same runs, show the inner walls clean.

How we approached it

We began by looking inside the trunk and a sample of the flex runs to confirm where the build-up was and how heavy it was. The supply trunk and each flex run were then cleaned under negative pressure, so the dust loosened from the duct walls was pulled out of the system and not blown into the rooms. Flex duct needs care because the inner liner is soft and can tear, so the cleaning method was matched to the duct type. The inside of the runs was photographed again at the end so the result could be compared.

Signs to watch for

  • Dust coming out of the vents when the system starts
  • Dark marks or dust around the supply registers
  • Dust settling on furniture soon after cleaning
  • Recent renovation or moving into a home with an unknown history
  • Visible debris when you look into a register

Why it matters

Every time the system runs, air passes over the inside of the ducts on its way to the rooms. Dust lining the flex runs and settling in the trunk is part of what circulates through the house. A whole-system cleaning removes that build-up from the trunk and every run, not only the registers you can see.

Outcome

How it finished

The supply trunk and the flex runs were cleaned, and the photos from inside the ducts show the difference before and after.

Questions

About this kind of job

Straight answers to the questions we hear most about this kind of work.

Is flex duct safe to clean?

Yes, when the method suits it. Flex duct has a soft inner liner, so we use tools and pressure suited to flex runs rather than the methods used for rigid metal duct.

Do you clean the whole system or just the vents?

The whole system: the supply trunk and each run, not only the registers. Cleaning only what is visible leaves most of the dust in place.

Will dust get into the house during the cleaning?

The system is kept under negative pressure while it is cleaned, so loosened dust is pulled out of the ducts rather than pushed into the rooms.

How will I know the ducts are clean?

We photograph the inside of the ducts before and after, so you can see the difference yourself.
