A treatment that follows cleaning, not a replacement for it

Sanitizing and disinfecting products are applied to duct surfaces after debris has been removed. They are an add-on to a proper cleaning, used when the condition of the system or the reason for the request calls for it.

The scope

  • Cleaning first — the ductwork is cleaned before any product is applied; treating dirty ducts is not effective.
  • Targeted application — the product is applied to the agreed sections of the system, following the manufacturer’s label.
  • Product information — you are told which product will be used and why before the work begins.
Sanitizing is usually discussed as part of an air duct cleaning request.

Before you ask for an estimate

  1. Explain why you are asking

Odors, a past pest problem or water damage are different situations. Describe yours so we can discuss whether treatment is appropriate.

  2. Ask about the product

You can ask for the product name and its label before agreeing to the treatment.

Questions

Straight answers about duct sanitizing

Is sanitizing the same as cleaning?

No. Cleaning removes dust and debris. Sanitizing or disinfecting is a treatment applied to surfaces after cleaning.

Does every home need it?

No. The EPA advises understanding the purpose and possible effects of chemical treatments before agreeing to them, and applying them only after the system has been properly cleaned.

Will it fix a mold problem?

Not by itself. The moisture source has to be found and corrected, and wet or moldy duct insulation usually needs to be replaced rather than treated.

Can I be home during the treatment?

Ask us when you book. We follow the product label, including any directions about ventilation and re-entry.
